Lovely lake with stunning views Two secluded waterfalls Excellent paths by the lakes Langdales from Elter Water. Elter Water is the smallest of the 16 lakes in the Lake District and is rapidly silting up but will always be a well visited spot due to the tranquility of the area, its easy access and the spectacular views of the Langdale Pikes. Park at Dalesgarth Station car park, or take a train on the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway. Make the most of your visit by staying in a cottage. The path bends around to the left and meets the A Ambleside to Coniston road.

Over the far side of the cattle grid, continue on the lane over the bridge until it meets the River Brathay by a wooden footbridge. It then bends away to the left along a stone man-made path through the trees, before reverting back to gravel underfoot. Here you can read the National Trust sign about the Herdwick sheep, which are prevalent in this area.

Ignore the left-hand fork that goes up some man-made steps, and take the right-hand fork which leads about fifty yards later to a viewpoint of Colwith Force. Moss Force can be found in Newlands Pass, above Buttermere village. Just beyond Wilson Place, take care with any oncoming traffic as you follow the narrow tarmac road left for about fifty yards, then take the next public footpath to the right down a grassy field and across a narrow wooden footbridge over a stream, the outflow of Little Langdale Tarn, to continue up to Stang End.
